You’ve booked your photography session, you’re counting down the days and then the forecast takes a turn, rain, wind or maybe just grey skies that don't match the dreamy light you had in mind. If you’ve been wondering what happens if the weather isn’t ideal on the day of your dog or horse session, here’s everything you need to know.
I always keep an eye on the forecast
I start checking the weather several days before your session. I know how unpredictable the weather can be, especially here in Australia, so I like to keep in touch as the day approaches. If things aren’t looking great, I’ll always reach out with a plan. That might mean adjusting the time slightly (early morning and late afternoon often bring better light and calmer conditions), or looking at alternative dates if the weather looks truly unworkable.
We can reschedule if needed
If the forecast is calling for heavy rain, strong winds or thunderstorms, we’ll simply reschedule. Your session should be an enjoyable and relaxed experience, not one where you’re trying to wrangle a soaked dog or a tense horse in howling winds. I build flexibility into my calendar for exactly this reason, and I want you to feel confident that your session will go ahead when the conditions are right for beautiful, natural images.
Cloudy skies can be beautiful
That said, not all “bad” weather is a dealbreaker. Overcast skies actually create gorgeous soft light, which is perfect for portraits. Without harsh shadows or squinting, we can get lovely detail and even lighting across your dog or horse. I’ve had many sessions under moody clouds that turned out beautifully, and sometimes those clouds bring a bit of drama and atmosphere that sunny skies just can’t match.
Some animals can be extremely sensitive to weather
Some pets are more weather-sensitive than others, and I completely take that into account. If your dog or your horse tends to get a bit fired up or nervous when the wind picks up, let’s play it safe and reschedule. Your pet’s comfort always comes first. The more relaxed they feel, the more natural the photos, and that’s always the goal.
No need to stress
The most important thing to remember is that you don’t need to stress about the weather. I’ll keep in touch, offer guidance and together we’ll make the best decision for your session. Whether we wait for a new date or work with what the skies give us, you can feel confident that your pet’s comfort and the quality of your images are always my top priority.
So if the forecast starts looking a little uncertain, don’t worry, I’ve got it covered. We’ll make it work, rain or shine.
At the end of the day, the weather is just one part of the story, and it’s something we can absolutely work around. Whether that means rescheduling for a better day, adjusting the time or making the most of soft, moody light, your session is always in good hands. I’ll guide you every step of the way so there’s no guesswork or stress, just a relaxed experience and beautiful images of your dog or horse, whatever the weather decides to do.
