Earlier this year I headed up north to photograph two horses, Leo an Irish Sport Horse x Warmblood and Catch a Thoroughbred. Their owners Evelyn and Hayden mentioned in their client questionnaire that they absolutely love each other and act like brothers, which made for some lovely images in their session.
We started our session under a shelter to capture some classic black background portraits. We used both their regular halters and my special photo halter, which I'll remove in the final edits. I always capture black background images individually as it is just too hard to wrangle two horses and have them looking a certain direction for the perfect artistic black background image.
After wrapping up the black background shots, we headed out to capture images of the horses outsoors. Our first stop was by the large dam, where we captured the horses on the edge of the water. The sun was partly covered by clouds, which helped diffuse its strong light while it was still high in the sky.
We then moved to the last spot for the session, a paddock with a small hill, just in time to catch the sun setting behind Leo and Catch. The warm, golden light was a beautiful contrast to the day's earlier shots, adding a relaxed, natural vibe to the photos.
Evelyn and Hayden chose my 20 digital file package and their favourite image of Leo and Catch as a 5" x 7" acrylic block during the online viewing and ordering appointment, held a week after the session. It was a pleasure to capture the unique bond between Leo and Catch, and the photos will surely be a cherished keepsake for their owners.
