Do you know how to keep your digital photos safe?

Digital files are by far the most popular option for my clients. I do my very best backing up my files in numerous places, and I strongly suggest my clients do the same. But, what and how is the best way to keep files safe?

My biggest tip is to save your files in numerous places and different devices. If one device fails, you will have a back up! USB drives, computers, phones and laptops can die suddenly due to unexpected damage or failure. I had a hard drive fail on me once and it cost over $2,000 to retrieve some very special family memories... lesson learned.

My second biggest tip is to use cloud based storage. I have all my personal and work files, plus all photo session images, backed up with Backblaze. Backblaze automatically keeps my files up to date as I edit photos and add in new sessions, and the best part is I can assess my files from any device with the Backblaze app installed. At only $7 USD a month, it is rather inexpensive too.

I also back up my phone to iCloud for $1.50 a month on the smallest package. Since I don't really use my phone as a photo storage device and barely use the camera at all, I found when buying a new iPhone it is so so so much easier to back up and restore your data to a new phone via iCloud than via a computer. 

Don't make my mistake and potentially lose a lot of money and, more importantly, precious memories, keep your photos safe!
